Where's 3K?

Where in the World is 3K Today?

This is the first installment in a new series we're going to title: "Where in the World is 3K Today?" Each week students will vote (go to the Surveys/Quizzes tab) to see where our class should visit for our virtual field trip. On Fridays I'll post a new picture, along with a few interesting facts about our location.

3K traveled back to 1969 for the first moon landing. Luckily Neil Armstrong was there to show us around!

Did you know...
-- The journey to the moon took about 4 days.
-- Only 12 NASA astronauts have ever walked on the moon.
-- The Space Shuttle, Apollo 11, traveled 953,054 miles on its eight-day trip to the moon and back.
-- Upon stepping on the surface of the moon, Neil Armstrong said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Math: The New Way

Investigations
As I'm sure you're aware, the Harrisburg School District adopted a new math program this year entitled Investigations. This curriculum is different than the traditional math approach that you and I both had growing up. This inquiry-driven math is much more hands on and places an emphasis on problem solving rather than memorization of facts and algorithms.

The Sioux Falls School District also adopted this math program. Click HERE for a recent Eye on Keloland story entitled Math: The New Way.

3K Math - Unit 2: Data Analysis

After collecting information from the class, students work in groups to organize their data into categories.
This group asked the class: "Where do you like to relax?"
They then sifted through the data and organized it into groups.

Our Friday Fun Time activity (for those who earned it) this week was a K'Nex Challenge. Students worked in small groups to construct a car that would travel the farthest.

Celery Experiment

Celery Experiment

Students have been busy this first science unit on plants. This week third graders conducted an experiment to see how water and nutrients are transported inside the plant stem.

Stalks of celery were placed in colored water and left alone for a full day.
Student scientists collect data before, during, and after the experiment.
Students examine the cross section of the celery and record their findings.
Plant tubes - xylem (carries water) and phloem (carries nutrients)
